Taiwan's TSMC: No Timetable For China Plant Application

TAIPEI -(Dow Jones)- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co . wouldn't comment on a local media report Wednesday that claimed the chip foundry would apply next week to build a plant in China .

"There is no definite timetable so far" for the application to set up manufacturing facilities on the mainland, a company official said.

The Chinese-language Commercial Times claimed TSMC would submit its application to Taiwan 's economics ministry next week to set up an eight-inch wafer plant in China .

However, the report also noted a senior official at the world's largest dedicated chip foundry denied it would apply next week.

If the approval process goes smoothly, TSMC expects to move on to the next stage of its China plan by August or September, the report said.

In late March, the Taiwanese government conditionally eased a ban on local chipmakers setting up wafer plants in China , paving the way for TSMC and rival United Microelectronics (NYSE: UMC - News) Corp. to expand into the mainland and its booming electronics market.

At 0255 GMT ( 10:55 p.m. EDT Tuesday), TSMC's stock was down 2.9% at NT$67.00 on volume of 22.2 million shares amid broader market declines.
