While attacks that target soldiers is in a different class than attacks targeting civilians, I wouldn't call if "justified". One other thing - though a soldier was killed, it isn't clear what the bomb beside the road was aimed at. And how about the attack on the policeman by a Palestinian policeman?

The quotes of PA officials make clear the breakout of the intifada was an affair they planned not a spontaneous emotional uprising:

<i<Imad Faluji, the Palestinian Authority Communications Minister, admitted months after Sharon's visit that the violence had been planned in July, far in advance of Sharon's "provocation." He said:
[The uprising] had been planned since Chairman Arafat's return from Camp David, when he turned the tables on the former US president and rejected the American conditions.

There it is in black and white. That statement removes any mystery.
