Thomas M. A good post. I have read reports that in that region, the US, India and Israel are working together to contain the activities of Al Qaeda. Musharraf is the wild card. During Rumsfeld's last trip to that region, he was successful in impressing on Mush that he needs to purge his Govt of those Ministers who had a soft corner for Muslim fundamentalism and thereby for Al Qaeda. Mush has done so starting with his Foreign Minister. But I see the fresh violence as round 2 and it is started by Al Qaeda. This time India is going to move very fast to secure Pakistan's nuclear facilities along with help from Israel and US (the pre-emptive strike that Bush has talked about). Once they do that then they will march into those tribal areas to flush out the Al Qaeda elements in the Afghan - Pakistan border. India is not interested in Pakistan similar to the US not wanting to remain in Afghanistan except for say bases in Kandahar to attack Saddam. My scenario is to have India and Israel march into the Al Qaeda hideouts in Pakistan. finish them by "smoking them from their foxholes" an then retreating quickly.
