Bush says Cheney did nothing wrong at Halliburton

WASHINGTON, July 17 (Reuters) - President George W. Bush defended his vice president's business record on Wednesday, saying he was confident the Securities and Exchange Commission's investigation of Halliburton Co. would show Dick Cheney did nothing wrong while serving as chief executive.

Asked if he was confident Cheney did nothing wrong while chief executive of Halliburton <HAL.N> from 1995 to 2000, Bush said: "Yes, I am."

Bush said the SEC's investigation of Halliburton would "run its course," adding at a press conference with the Polish president: "I've got great confidence in the vice president. ... When I picked him, I knew he was a fine business leader and a fine experienced man."

The White House has promised to pursue "wherever it leads" an investigation of Halliburton, which provides products and services to the energy industry. The SEC is investigating how the company accounted for cost overruns on construction jobs. The legal watchdog group Judicial Watch has sued Cheney and Halliburton, alleging they defrauded shareholders by overstating company revenues.
