I have quit trying to assist any friends with their machines because none of them get it. Every home user has issues with their windows computer and many wished they never purchased one in the first place, although they now consider them indispensable. They want a better alternative. >by doing this you marginalize the MacOS, making it just as bad as WindowsXP... you create the same headaches of not having the right drivers for the right monitors and the right Firewire cards and the right peripherals..... you've in effect created the Wintel problems all over again.....< I am not talking about needing drivers for various components; I am talking about one configuration with all Apple written drivers. Besides, the world of computer componentry is not that complicated anymore. Take a look around; how many video cards, sound cards or any components are available any more, not many. The market has taken care of that. >it would be just as bad as Wintel, but with the added bonus of being involved in a price war with one more player with all these other people who do the same thing......< No price war it's not a commodity. It's a Mac. >and advertising research firm did a study this year, and apple's flatpanel imac add that sticks its tongue out, was the highest rated ad this year so far for people who "liked it"...... < Great commercial but apparently it's not selling computers. Technology consumers are addicted to dropping prices. By the way, Apple wouldn't have to make money on an initiative like this, just break even; the point being to increase the user base and get people talking about Macs again. Have you ever read the book, "The Tipping Point"? Very thought provoking and all about capturing mind share and how things become phenomenas. >like a Mercedes with a built in CORDED phone..... something is out of place, and people are going to notice....< People drive Mercedes and Hummers around so others can see them. Houses are visible from the street and unless Apple starts tattooing MAC USER on people's foreheads there is no reason to expect people to conspicuously consume Macs. david
