"I assume most of the program trading was short selling ?"

Most of the discussion I've seen suggests just the opposite. The v-shape rallies we've been having, especially the recovery from -400 on the Dow the other day, have been seen by many to suggest program buying, not selling.

I didn't read the article, but I see no reason to assume most of the program trading was short selling. I don't know what the hedge funds are doing, but I believe most funds aren't allowed to short. It is more likely just plain institutional selling to raise funds for clients who have liquidity problems or who see better returns in the bond and foreign markets, or even in money market funds. That's why I've been selling.
