To: Lazarus_Long who wrote (277284 ) 7/18/2002 10:16:40 AM From: PROLIFE Respond to of 769667 you say this about the men used in that post:Most of those men you cite were Deists. You think so?Patrick Henry in his last will and testament: " This is all the inheritance I give to my dear family. The religion of Christ will give them one which will make them rich indeed" and Patrick Henry's grandson , Patrick Henry Fontaine, said the Henry had committed himself to the: "Earnest efforts to establish true Christianity in our country." Thomas Jefferson probably was a deist. But he wrote many times of the value of true Christianity when stripped away from the bondage of denominationalism. I could post bunches of his quotes concerning that. But here is just one: "Had the doctrine of Jesus been preached always as pure as they came from his lips, the whole civilized world would now have been Christians" When Ben Franklin said this: "God governs in the affairs of men. If a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid?" He was actually quoting New Testament scripture as recorded in Matthew 10:29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. Ben was great friends with the famous preacher of the time George Whitefield, and even built an auditorium big enough to handle the crowds that came to listen to Whitefield. This building became the first building of the University of Penn. Hardly the act of a died in the wool Deist.George Washington was an active Episcopalian. Many posts could be made on his quotes. Two will suffice here: The General hopes and trusts that every officer and man, will endeavor so to live, and act, as becomes a Christian Soldier defending the dearest Rights and Liberties of his country." and serving for over 20 years with the church as a vestryman and at times serving as churchwarden, he would have regularly quoted the apostles creed: ' I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord'. In a letter to a friend, ALEXANDER HAMILTON, wrote this:...."I now offer you the outline of the plan they have suggested. Let an association be formed to be denominated ' The Christian Constitutional Society ' , it’s object to be the first: The support of the Christian religion, second: the support of the United States." And after being shot in a duel by Aaron Burr, Hamilton says this: "I have a tender reliance on the mercy of the Almighty through the merits of the Lord Jesus Christ. I am a sinner. I look to Him for mercy; pray for me." James Madison had many many notes written in his personal Bible, among them, what he wrote in the area of Acts ch. 19: among them , " Believers who are in a state of grace, have need for the word of God for their Edification and Building up therefore implies a possibility of falling. V. 32."… And again what he wrote by Luke 12: "Grace, it is the free gift of God" Robert E Lee who released his slaves several years before the war, says this: " Soldiers! Let un humble ourselves before the Lord, our God, asking through Christ..." and again regarding the bible he says: ...I fully accept it as the infallible Word of God, and receive its teachings as inspired by the Holy Spirit." Abe Lincoln although not a proclaimed Christian, writes: "That I am not a member of any Christian Church is true; but I have never denied the truth of the Scriptures; and I have never spoke with intentional disrespect of religion in general or of any Denomination of Christians in particular...I do not think I could, myself, be brought to support a man for office whom I knew to be an open enemy of, and scoffer at religion." Andrew Johnson has these tidbits to say: " I do believe in Almighty God! And I believe also in the Bible." and Let us look forward to the time when we can take the flag of our country and nail it below the Cross.." no Deist here. Theodore Roosevelt said many things among them: A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education. and ....I am enabled, to preach the practical moralities of the Bible to my countrymen and to hold up Christ as the hope and Savior of the world." Now, Mr. Long, can you honestly sit there and still say most those men were Deists? I think not.
