Toshiba, the world's second-largest chip maker, said on Wednesday that it had cancelled summer holiday plans at microchip plants in Japan due to stronger than expected demand, the latest sign of the sector's steady recovery.
Except for a three-day shutdown for maintenance at two of its four domestic semiconductor plants, all the Toshiba facilities scrapped previously scheduled holidays that had ranged from nine to 14 days.

"The market is healthier than we'd expected," a Toshiba spokesman said.

"The April-June quarter was good and July looks good, and while there's still some uncertainty about August and September, it doesn't look like there will be a drastic decline."

He said that it was still difficult, however, to gauge the outlook for demand in the latter half of the business year to next March.

Japan's big chip makers also cancelled spring holidays in late April and early May as the global semiconductor industry began recovering in earnest from last year's record-breaking slump.

Each year the companies schedule seasonal holidays that are frequently adjusted to help align output with market conditions.

In mid-afternoon trade Toshiba's shares were down 0.42 per cent at 479 yen, in line with a 0.68 per cent drop in the Tokyo Stock Exchange's electrical machinery index .
