There is more to this issue than the ears - the body itself reacts negatively to high SPL's (Sound Pressure Levels). I seem to recall that this was discussed earlier on this thread?

Ear plugs - even headsets - by definition cannot protect against that. Perhaps some kind of sound-absorbing full body suite would work, or even an active noise cancellation suite that produced a sound field of equal amplitude but opposite phase from what was being received. Neither defense is practical, obviously.
