I used to be a huge Mac fan. I have always hated Microsoft. Still, the argument that Macs crash less than PC's, presuming one is running the latest of each, is just untrue. I have friends and colleagues that have stuck with Mac and they have done one of two things: live with the crashing or buy huge gobs of memory and get less crashes.

OT: The stability of NT is due to Dave Cutler, who also was the key architect of DEC's VAX/VMS, a system that would stay online 24/365 without a single reboot and this over 20 years ago.

Gates was fortunate to have hired him (and his key team members along with the IP he was working on at DEC...)

I find it absolutely revolting that people think it should be "normal" that computers crash. But in SW development, there's never enough time to do anything right, but always plenty of time to do it over...

Grace, we've got some fast Mac's, and they're high powered machines for the graphics people. They're 1-year old, and we loaded them with over 1-GB of memory when memory got cheap (they may have 2GB even, but I don't remember).

I'm near that department, and I approve all the purchases. I've found that when the machines are set up properly and memory is allocated properly, crashes happen quite infrequently. Our lead designer can't remember the last time he crashed. We're using OS 9.0.4 and the 2nd most recent versions of the graphics software.

I crash every day on Win 95, and our other people crash on 98 lots also.

XP crashes on my every day at home, and you can hear it preventing crashes all the time.

Of course everything crashes, that's why I'm offended by the Apple commercials that imply that PCs crash and Macs don't. I can't tell you how many times I had to rebuild the desktop or do a hardware reboot on my Mac. I've had to use Norton on the hard drive hundreds of times.

if you'll notice this person admits to being a NT user, not even a Mac user at all except for taking in someone elses Mac work, but suddenly this person tells everyone that the Mac crashes a lot???..... anybody who actually uses both platforms for the same task knows the difference....

i remember these same people trying to pretend to be mac users and were telling everyone that Windows98 was so much better than the Mac....

now no one in their right Mind, not even a Wintel user would even think Windows98 was on the same planet as a mac if given the two for the first time from the same time period.......

same with windows95, and W2000, although i don't think anyone thought Windows3.1 was more than a joke..... not even a Wintel user...

now it is windowsXP's turn...... i wonder what they will say when the next Windows comes out......

same old same old....
