Ben, VBMFX is not a half-bad choice. Yes, I still hate indexing, but this one wisely strays from the index once in a while. Besides, indexing is not nearly as brain dead for quality bonds as it is for stocks, as there is less opportunity for value added. (Unless you use something like a discount driven closed end fund of funds, and I've never seen a 401K that allows that. <g>) It has less than 5 years duration, which puts it on the shorter side of intermediate term with a AA credit rating.

I envy you having a gold fund in your 401K.
