Sam,

We have been around a while. Compare the internet to the telephone system that we grew up with and took for granted. These online discussions, online Q reports and conference calls, streaming quotes and online trading for $10 is a far cry from the call to my broker and trades that cost $100 or more.

Think about the virtual office building which will eliminate commuting for most people. Think about the time, resources, and money saved and the decrease in polution and hothouse gases. Think about parents at home again when their kids come home from school, but home again working. Think about foreign workers who will not need to leave their country when they join the virtual office building of their new company.
History provides insights. People are the same, so the dangers of greed and corruption must be looked out for. Monopolists and the governments they bribe are a concern and we already have a little history. The virtual world is more interdependent than the primarily physical world of the past. Privacy and personal freedom are obvious concerns and we see that problem already. The tug of war between perceived corporate and individual interests that has made a mess out of formerly regulated airline, electric and gas utility, and telephone utility industries, will be a danger to the virtual world systems.
