If we can't even guarantee a government we like in Iraq then how can we be certain of a government we don't despise either? But you are right about a commitment toward a long term occupation of Iraq to maintain stability if we do, indeed, invade. But that brings us back to the vexing question of how long we would be welcomed in Iraq before we are viewed as overbearing or oppressive? << Doing more than that is asking too much, IMO, of anyone. >> Agreed. But a frank dialogue in this country regarding the risks and benefits of a full invasion, occupation, and restructure of Iraq is in order. Right now, we are simply getting the party line.

If you want to influence a people to love the US, the best way is to not get the US military involved with them. We won't have any more influence on Iraq's future government than we had in Iran or Vietnam. Our success in Germany and Japan depended on our killing several percent of their populations. -- Carl
