<<Digging up and reburying gold is a pointless waste of time and effort>>

Sort of like printing money, and ripping it up again... except the ease with which to keep printing seems just tooooo tempting to meglomaniacs like Alan Greenspan. Sad but a perfect example of total lack of self control exibited by much of the human race... another example is obesity explosion in the US with a total denial of responsibility. Instead, we'll hit up the treasury for the money to buy drugs to treat the rainbow of maladies it creates.

It's very simple, AG is simply a typical guy way overestimating his own importance and insight... like most of us:

"The foolish reject what they see, the wise reject what they think"

"The man who knows he is a fool is not such a great fool"

Jay, you always make things so difficult. Okay, it's true what you wrote, that gold, which does have value for many things, including simple aesthetic values of a more permanent nature than the aesthetic value of a beautiful golf drive or curving putt to its precise deterministic destination, is worth digging up and storing.

While dug up, waiting to be used, it might as well also serve a function as means of trading value, storing savings and value, help build musculature and sense of well-being [by being lifted, stroked and ogled].

Oh, I hate being seduced by evil-doers who tempt me with false hedonism, away from the true path of ascetic purity.

But how much hedonism is really needed? Does a Fort Knox really contribute to peace, light, harmony and happiness in utilitarian sychronicity? Or, is it like an alcoholic who doesn't know when to stop. A mad Midas. A 200 kg obese person wolfing down yet another ice-cream and Big Mac. How much is enough?

As you say, some stocks are good. But isn't 10 years of stock enough? What happens when gold suddenly becomes a monetary artifact, replaced by platinum, some other metal, phragmented photon production, the Q or some other simple, secure, safe, exchangeable abracadabra? The Aztecs will be clutching their talisman, wondering how the world passed them by, trading their gold at low prices for a few essentials.

If you are right, then you should mortgage your house, take out loans on your margin accounts, borrow what else you can, convert it to US$, then buy, buy, buy gold and leverage each purchase to buy more. Then, when your ship comes in and the most outrageous is saved for the end, and the counterparties to the US$ suddenly find the Mighty Dollar is like a lira or Argentine peso, you'll be able to pay off your loans with a tiny, tiny fraction of your gold.

Don't delay, borrow some of my US$ today. I need the interest rates to go up! You'll never have to repay me, if you are right. Hey, borrow some yen too if you believe it's turning to confetti.

I must admit, I'm not totally happy about holding a stack of US and Kiwi cash, so you'll have to borrow it quickly before I swap it for something real, like more Phragmented Photons.

So you see, I am NOT tempted by your blandishments to wealth, strength and sensuous happiness. But I do admit to keeping an eye on the price and maybe just a taste wouldn't hurt, just to show I can handle it you understand.
