The Supreme Court on Thursday gave three weeks to Anti-Terrorism Court, Dera Ghazi Khan, for completing the proceedings of Meerwala gang-rape case. The Supreme Court bench, comprising Chief Justice Sheikh Riaz Ahmad, Justice Munir A Sheikh and Justice Qazi Muhammad Farooq, ordered the district anti-terrorism court to report the proceedings to the superior court. It also asked the police to give protection to the victim and her family. On July 11, the Supreme Court had directed the Punjab police to speed up probe into the Meerwala gang-rape case and file challan by July 18. The Deputy Inspector General of Dera Ghazi Khan Range, Asif Nawaz, also submitted police record before the three-member Supreme Court bench. Submitting the details of investigations carried out over the week, the DIG told the SC bench on Thursday that the police had completed the investigation into the gang-rape case. The police official also informed the superior court of having arrested all the accused nominated in the case besides recording the statements of all the witnesses under section 164. Police have submitted the challan of Meerwala gang-rape case before the Anti-Terrorism Court Dera Ghazi Khan on Thursday. SHO Jatoi Police Station, District Muzaffargarh, Latif Chandia submitted the challan before the ATC DG Khan judge Zulfiqar Ali. The judge adjourned the matter for Friday after scrutinising the challan. The accused were represented by advocate Yaqoob Khan. Meanwhile, special prosecutor, Malik Ramzan Khalid Joya, who has been hired by the government to prosecute the accused in this case, told APP by telephone that prosecution would do its best for award of severe punishment to accused under the law. "We will request the court for the maximum punishment which is provided under the law...and that is the death penalty," Joya told Reuters "All the accused are liable for the death penalty or life imprisonment for either rape or abetment under the Pakistan Criminal Code," Joya said. "We will try to plead our case in a best possible way and leave the rest on the judgment of the ATC judge", he added. He hoped that after completion of initial and mandatory judicial process, including the handing over of copies of charge sheet to the accused, the regular hearing was likely to begin from Monday.
