Of course, I imagine Dell could talk at least one retailer into carrying their line of print cartridges if they wanted to go that route.

It's not quite that simple or everyone would be doing it. There are some IP issues in copying the firmware that is embedded in the print cartridges, not to mention invalidating the warranty. That's why most of the non-OEM HP print cartridges are remanufactured HP originals.
