A bunch of bananas has value today even though it won't in two years. Similarly, options are perishable. They have value when granted, although they might not later on.

Bingo! In their zeal to do something, the public and politicians are convinced that a method for expensing options needs to be implemented. The problem is that any method used to expense options has flaws and unintended consequences. I don't think that this would be a big issue if it wasn't for the fact that greed and excessive grants have pissed off investors.
