Cell Phone Sales, Led by Camera-Equipped Models, Soar in June
July 19, 2002 (TOKYO) -- Sales of cellular phone handsets surged in June due to the popularity of camera-equipped handsets, according to the Multimedia Research Institute.

Some 3.82 million handsets were sold in June alone, surpassing the 3.08 million units sold in May.

NTT DoCoMo Inc.'s new handsets -- the N504i, manufactured by NEC Corp., and Sharp Corp.'s SH251i, equipped with a digital camera -- were especially popular.

DoCoMo accounted for 53.5 percent of all cell phone sales in the first week of June. The figure surged to 64 percent in the fourth week due to the release of the camera-equipped models.

Institute officials believe the next agenda item in recovering cell phone sales is to improve the basic features of handsets, such as making them thinner.
