It's not a stupid question at all!

From what I understand, it's a scent trail they follow. Since these animals are nocturnal, they like to follow each others trails. You might see raccoons too since they also rely on their scenting abilities. If you got one, there's a good bet you got 'em all. The best way to get rid of them without harming 'em is to destroy the scent trail.
