What the desktop computer market "needs" is compelling, "snappy" new software

I think we all can mostly do what we want to do with computers nowdays at reasonable speeds. For instance what could be added to Photoshop that it can't do? The only compelling thing they've added lately is stuff that Illustrator does. It's hard to constantly come up with better stuff. Even in processor power when you are using Photoshop you really don't need a processor much faster than what they offer now. They are up against a brick wall in a way.

More than faster processors or new software the big gap is internet access speed. Most people are stuck at best at 56K, and even those with DSL or Cable isn't really fast enough for broadcast video, and it's expensive at $600/year. Here we are up against the phone and cable monopolies.

The only area that is capable of constantly offering compelling products is the content area. Movies, games, music. All high bandwith.

Apples push into Video and Music authoring software makes sense because those are areas that can benefit from faster processors. When your rendering a Movie you can't have enough processor power or fast enough disks. It's like rendering and writing thousands of Photoshop images. Ironically Apple can't seem to move the processor speed fast enough for Macs to become overwhelmingly attractive in these areas. It's also a limited growth area because we all don't need Photoshop or Logic Audio.

It's an interesting question. Where is it the industry can expand. Maybe it just can't. Like the auto industry it must be content just to sell to the installed base now. The days of great innovation are over.
