AMD makes all out attack on Intel P4 Celeron

Crashes games, clouds marketplace, confuses people
By Mike Magee: Friday 19 July 2002, 08:27

A DOCUMENT AMD is showing its customer's describes Intel's new Celeron designs as being "all bark and no bite".

The piece, however, refers to the 1.8GHz and the 1.7GHz Pentium 4 Celerons that use the Willamette core and have 128K of level two cache.

AMD claims that most 1.7GGHz and 1.8GHz Celerons using this design come with an i845G chipset and that this combination "struggles to run some of today's latest entertainment applications".

It quotes PC World for the "bark and no bite" quotation, has Keven Krewell at Microdesign resources saying: "I think Intel's handling of [this] Celeron represents a complete disregard for its customers" and quotes Van's HW as saying: "Alas, Intel has delivered another spineless processor to the uninformed masses".

The document contains a chart that compares Intel processors to AMD's.

How 845G Celeron stacks up

AMD lists the applications that Celerons in combination with the 845G chipset can't run as Tiger Woods 2002, which won't play in hardware mode; Spiderman, which crashes; Nascar 2002 which crashes.

The firm claims that the Celeron with the 845G "appears to be obsolete before the customer gets it home".

It attacks Intel for "clouding the PC marektplace and confusing uneducated consumers".

As we revealed last week, we believe Intel is well on the way to introducing Celerons based on the .13 micron (130 nanometers) core.

An Intel representative said the firm would not comment on the AMD paper. But he said that the Pentium 4 chip is the world best selling desktop processor and the Celeron chip is the world's second best selling desktop chip.

"Our products are also backed up by industry leading support capabilities, for example if a user experiences problems with a game they should check our the "Gaming Guide" here, which lists all the leading games and any known issues and associated fixes.

"We are stating only this week that .13µ chips are now over 50% of our microprocessor shipments" µ
