Yes, it's possible that some influential disgruntled individual decided to instigate their own vendetta against Elgindy. They called the FBI and started the ball rolling. Of course, it would also be to this influential person's interest to see that the quality of the evidence accumulated by the Feds is sufficient for conviction.

We will find out quite a bit once the trial starts.

Personally, I'd be shocked if the FBI case comes down to the word of two or three witnesses against Elgindy's word.

I suspect there is wiretap info, money trail records, emails, etc.
