2 reasons:

1) Opening gap had to be closed to move higher, so we had to move to unchanged before going higher. XAU and HUI had tough time doing that - I guess, too many buyers? -g-

2) XAU options expiration. A lot of expiring calls traded today, which also confirms move lower. We'll see what Monday will bring.

You did know ABX & PDG are being thrown out of S&P 500, right? They are both in XAU.

Today is a perfect example of what I warned about on Tuesday: a little bad news helps gold stocks but too much can actually make them act just like other stocks. Dow drops 400, gold bullion goes up $7, and gold stocks (on average) do nothing. Did not surprise me at all.

My reason is that the $320-$330 gold has been priced into all the gold stocks. Gold has to break through 340 to see the next big move in the stocks.
