each side is preaching a moral righteousness, both of itself and in answer to the other side. The "neanderthals" are preaching Western Civilization against Barbarism (an argument inherited directly from the Roman Empire); the liberals (who have the European elites in their camp) are preaching Marxist-tinged liberal guilt

I would say that both sides are blinded by ideology (a frequent problem when discourse is hijacked by extremes). One is paralyzed with guilt at the colonial legacy; the other tries to pretend that the colonial legacy doesn't exist. One is obsessed with colonial history; the other all too frequently ignores it. Neither is equipped to deal with the emerging situations in the postcolonial world.

Unfortunately, it seems to me that the situation is polarizing, and the extremes are becoming more evident while the middle voices fade.
