Check your Systray, on the bottom right of the screen. Those are the things running in the background. Some of them you may not need and can eliminate. This might be a place to start.

In case tc is wondering why I am saying this, my computer guy is here. We are installing XP Pro on my other ma=chine and importing/exporting a bunch of stuff.
