This posting is a snapshot of the problems plaguing the equity markets in general.

Steve M. @Merrill is an opportunist, not an analyst. He favors slash-and-burn over improved product quality. He wants the company to get blood out of a stone so he can make more money on his commissions. People like him are bad news.

Steve M. @Merrill is not alone. Most everyone wants to see is better eps no matter what it takes. Corporations who respond to this kind of pressure will hurt themselves and hurt the economy in the long run. We don't need that.

This is a "troubled business model??" Why?? Sure profits per employee "have declined" in the last 18 months. Sun hasn't done much laying off. They still have better profits per employee than IBM (talk about bloated).

These are scare tactics, pure and simple.

The tired talk (Lehman Bros.) about Unix vs. Intel/MSFT is useless gum-flapping. The old "they're gaining on Sun" is going to be a contrarian hue-and-cry until and unless Intel goes out of business. Sun investors just have to live with it.

The point is, the "problems" in the equity markets are 99% psychological and 1% structural. This is why we need *strong* leadership from our President. We're not getting it.

Here's something to think about:
1919: WWI Armistice
1989: Soviet Union falls

1920-1929 roaring 20's
1990-1999 roaring 90's

1929: Stock Market Crash
2000: Stock Market Slow Burn

1932-1945 Great Depression/WWII
2002-???? ??????

1924-1928 Warren G. Harding (weak-willed philanderer)
1992-2000 Bill Clinton (weak-willed philanderer)

1929-1932 Herbert Hoover (business man)
2000-???? George W. Bush (business man)

Wasn't there a saying about those who fail to learn from history being condemned to repeat it??? it's important to remember that capitalism didn't bail itself out of the great depression. We got out of it because we won WWII.
