Actually, the two situations are fairly symmetrical. Some poor slob cops told to investigate a major political power - but not too hard.

What, you think Kennedy was just taking her home, was sober, the bridge incident was a total accident with no contributory negligence on Kennedy's part, and he hit his head, woke up under water, forgot she was in the car, swam to shore, got home somehow, and then when he woke up the next morning remembered what had happened?
