I'll be paying the FICA tax on my H1-B visa but need to work in the US 10 years or become a citizen to claim benefits one day down the road.

I just booked my hotel in Portland OR on the net, so every detail of my big move (though being international move #7 the novelty isn't exactly there any more) and trip is now in place. Next week is final packing and the various movers, cleaners etc. etc. There is a farewell dinner on Wed night (there was a morning tea at the University already) and then I fly on Friday morning to LA (getting there before I leave of course) meeting a Law Professor friend (about to become professor, former corporate lawyer) for breakfast in LA. Then I fly up to Portland to meet up with my friend who is currently working at a TCM clinic there. On Monday I fly to Albany arriving in the evening. Teaching starts on 26 August so lots to do fairly fast after I get there.

Now I just heard on Friday that a close friend is getting
married 5 September in the Netherlands. Well I'm teaching that day and the next and it's only the second week of the semester so a Trans-Atlantic trip doesn't look too likely :) Now if she held it the previous weekend (the long Labor Day weekend in the US) it would be rather tempting! Crossing the Atlantic seems like totally trivial after living in Australia....
