Gregory Schultz, principal with Walnut Creek-based Asset Allocation Advisors, believes the selling is no longer based on fundamentals such as the economy, which is recovering, or corporate profits, which have been decent lately.

"Think of a 2-year-old spoiled brat on the floor, flailing away, throwing a temper tantrum," Schultz said. "It has nothing to do with rational thinking. It won't be over until the brat finishes.

Today's selling, Schultz said, is marked primarily by emotion rather than logic.
