Actually, I believe there is a simple fix to this problem.

Recently, a relative of mine required a drug for a medical problem. The one that was prescribed was a new drug, yet it had an undesirable side effect. The doctor then tried to prescribe an older drug (which she knew was efficacious for this problem). The drug had been discontinued. Even with generic manufacturers. An international company manufactured an equivalent to the old drug and it was prescribed as the alternative medicine.

This industry needs generic manufacturers who will make older medicine that is less costly. Not everyone needs the "latest and greatest" product on the shelf to treat their disease. The reason I say this is because everyone's body has a similar and yet minutely different chemical mechanism to react to their affliction.

The old drugs will work for some of the people.
