I'm afraid that I am an employee of the government. When I made the decision about what I wanted to do in life (in the sixth grade), the government was the best place to do what I wanted to do (be a forester). For many years -- one hundred, to be exact -- the outfit I work for was the finest jewel in the government. We and the FBI were the only two agencies that returned a profit to the treasury. It was commonly said that if they had given us the job of putting a man on the moon, we would have done it in less time and under budget. Now the employees prospering most are attorneys that we had to hire to fend off ecoterrorists. Every dollar that we return to the treasury is below cost. We have a police force that isn't even accountable to the same people that manage the land. That police force claims to have interdicted more marijuana plantations than the DEA and the FBI put together. Together with all the other federal police forces it is probably the largest police force in the country.

Things are getting better, though, and have been steadily since George Bush took office. The Chief is visiting here next week and I am going to tell him exactly that.

I'm not sure you will be all that happy when you find out where your dollar bills are going and where they've been. The exact ones in your wallet, I mean. I bet they have seen some pretty nasty places.
