One possible impact of middleware might be similar to that of the PC operating system (MSFT) and processor (INTC). More and more function is concentrated in the middleware. As most customers standardize on 1 or 2 middleware suites (IBM and BEA?) the bulk of the profit could accrue to the middleware providers at the expense of the "application" SW vendors. In fact the middleware might become more important and more profitable than the operating system or HW. <edit: just saw a responding post from Mike Buckley saying about the same as this post>
