Like the Nazis, the Baathists of Hafez Assad are torturing these young men and women, many died, others became insane

Interesting that the author would compare the Baathists to Nazis. In reality, it was the Maronite Christians who actually embraced the Nazi movement. The Christian Phalange that committed the Sabra/Shatila massacre under Israeli orders was based on the Spanish fascist movement, and Phalange founder Gemayel spefically cited Nazi Germany as his model.

Goldsnow, right at this moment, the Middle East Christians are not all that powerful. They are the strongest in Lebanon. The young Assad of Syria and King Abdulla of Jordan are more secular, due to their Western education. I would hope that these two will not be repressive and instead be more accomodative of the Christians than their fathers. It will take them some time say 7 to 10 years to establish themselves in their countries' power structure. And then we can expect to see the Druze and others gain the upper hand over the Islamic Jihad and the Hezbollah who continue to be entrenched in Lebanese politics along with Syria.

It is a good issue that you have raised and it would be worthwhile to dwell on it further. I will try to add to it after I do some more research myself.
