rw, From left field, could this be a terrorist attack? Disrupt the USA by ruining the markets?
Backed by monied traders who live in the middel east?
rallied 400 points in one hour? sounds like the possibility of directed buying to weighted stocks in the index

Rwigham, Re: Those big up-ticks only happen during a bear market. These are short-covering rallies. I had a link to the statistics on these but can't find it.

Here's a very good article describing these massive bear market rallies:

So I guess it's a good idea to buy some puts the next day the Nasdaq rallies 5%+ in one day.
