Dear Ken: Yes, I watched the Greenspan testimony in the Senate when all of that happened. Most of you know my feelings about Greenspan but in his defense we have to remember that during that time we had:
1. The Mexican Peso devaluation and collapse
2. The Russian Ruple devaluation and potential collapse
I BELIEVE that going from memory AG was using FED monetary policy to prop up those currencies as well as our own to avoid a monetary collapse world wide. (Incidentally I think I recall a THAI problem also at that time).
Now, whether or not the USA FED whose SOLE JOB is SUPPOSED TO BE keeping the $$$ sound is supposed to be tinkering worldwide, I dont know, leave that up to the experts to decide, but thats at least ONE REASON he pushed up the money supply so much. Course as a result, Clinton gets credit for an economy he had no personal responsability for, just as now BUSH gets the blame for an economic problem HE had no responsability for, MEANWHILE the TEFLON CHAIRMAN is told he is the BEST EVER. haha. IRONIC ISN'T IT??
Now, regarding housing, many years ago I had a stint in that industry as a modular home manufacturer. I seem to recall that in a site built home there are over 3,000 suppliers directly or indirectly involved so I DO THINK the housing industry IS IMPORTANT to the economy and this time I HOPE Greenie is right that the strength of that industry will keep us afloat till things work themselves out.
Worst comes to worst, I suppose Bush will manage a nice little war to JUMP START the economy. Do I hear IRAQ? JDN
