Yes I agree re the historical averages. But there are many smaller, very good co's out there to invest in and these will strongly outperform the averages.

I think reduced raises (lower than the avg 4% of the last couple of yrs ) and more layoffs to come could put a crimp in consumer spending going forward. If consumer spending really loses steam seriously, things would get really ugly, as the consumer sector is the only one holding up the bottom.
