If MSFT employees put out such trashy software such as Windows 95/98 when their stock options were in the money imagine what kinda work will they produce when they know they cannot retire rich in a few years.

Simba you are correct. The Microsoft engineers I know are not the best engineers I know by a long shot. However, some of the Microsoft business development folks and marketing people ARE pretty brilliant. One Microsoft VP of Sales who had been there since 1988 lived in my dorm back in college. He was very bright. To his credit, he left when the antitrust suit started intensifying.
