There will be credit after debt insurance dies, just like there was credit before debt insurance was born. The issuers will have to pay a bit more interest and the buyers do a little more homework.

there is no way to protect yourself in a worst case scenario
that keeps me up at night too. Outside of gold bars in a safe, how does one protect themselves?
