From Brieifng.com: 8:16AM June semi equipment book/bill edges higher : The June semi equipment book/bill ratio was released late Friday - the ratio edged up to 1.28 from a revised 1.27 in June. Most brokerage firm comments on the data are pretty neutral - noting that the numbers were slightly better than expected, but that the focus is on earnings right now.

8:11AM BellSouth misses qtr; lowers full yr guidance (BLS) 27.61: Posts Q2 normalized earnings of $0.53 a share, $0.04 below the Multex consensus of $0.57. The results include bad debt expense of $255 mln or $0.05 per share. For 2002, sees normalized EPS of $2.13-$2.20 (consensus $2.34).

7:50AM Texas Instruments: cautious comments by Merrill Lynch (TXN) 24.85: Merrill Lynch thinks that consensus ests have become too aggressive for TXN, and sees limited upside as a result of the already-high valuation and greater downside if TXN encounters any problems; reiterates Near-Term Neutral rating.

7:10AM Cymer tops consensus; provides cautious guidance (CYMI) 29.02: -- Update -- Reports Q2 net of $0.18 a share, $0.01 better than consensus. Revs rose 5% to $73.67 mln (consensus $72.64 mln). "...utilization rates of our light sources turned flat to slightly lower late in the second quarter. We believe these utilization rates could continue through the third quarter. Additionally, we have not become engaged with our customers in the kind of ramp planning we would expect to experience if a sustainable upturn were going to be underway before the end of 2002."

7:07AM Citigroup deal helped Enron disguise debts, NASD going after Grubman (C) 36.00: The Wall Street Journal reports that C arranged an unusual financing technique for Enron that enabled the energy trader to appear rich in cash rather than burdened with debt; in a series of deals known as Yosemite, C's complex scheme helped Enron borrow money over the past 3 years that was booked as coming from trades instead of loans. Separately, the NASD is preparing to take regulatory action against Salomon Smith Barney analyst Jack Grubman, which marks the first major crackdown by federal securities regulators investigating how big securities firms obtained investment-banking business with overly optimistic stock picks.

6:42AM Cymer secures $79+ mln volume purchase agreement (CYMI) 29.02: Announces that it has secured a volume purchase agreement, valued at more than $79 mln, with one of the world's top lithography equipment suppliers for Cymer's ELS-7000 krypton fluoride light source.
