If US consumers follow Canadian consumers .. Q3 and Q4 outlook will suffer.

Canadian consumers beat a surprise retreat in May, with retail sales falling 1.3 per during the month, Statistics Canada said Monday.

Excluding autos, sales were down 1.6 per cent compared with April's figures.

The numbers were well below economists forecasts, which had called for a slight increase over April's 1-per-cent gain in retail sales.

A consensus forecasts had called for a 0.4 per cent overall increase in May. Sales outside the auto sector were expected to climb by 0.3 per cent.

"Retail sales appeared to have plateaued since January, after four months of sharp advances," Statscan said in its closely watched monthly report.

For the month, Statscan said sales in the clothing sector fell 5.3 per cent, while the other category — which includes liquor, hardware and book retailers — fell 2.3 per cent.

Only drug and furniture stores posted increases in May.

Sales by motor vehicle dealers declined 0.5 per cent during the month, the government agency said.
