SANTA CLARA, Calif.----Aug. 5, 2002--Transmeta Corporation (Nasdaq:TMTA.Q) today announced that its energy efficient Crusoe TM5800 processor has been chosen for NEC Solutions America's
PowerMate eco(TM) desktop computer. The PowerMate eco features a 15-inch TFT LCD flat panel screen,
with the rest of the computer embedded in the back of the flat panel monitor. By using Transmeta's low-power, 900MHz Crusoe processor and a low-noise disk drive, the PowerMate eco is cool and quiet, allowing
the entire computer to be integrated into the back of the monitor without using a fan. The system was recently announced in Japan and NEC Solutions America today introduced the PowerMate eco into the U.S.
market. "Transmeta's energy efficient Crusoe processor enabled NEC to design an innovative, fanless desktop computer," said Dr. Matthew R. Perry, president and CEO, Transmeta Corporation. "NEC Solutions
America has taken a leadership role in creating an integrated desktop PC that is environmentally friendly and a smart buy for corporations and consumers looking for energy savings, space savings and a quiet
workspace."
In June 2001, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA)
ENERGY STAR(R) program awarded Transmeta Corporation a Certificate of
Recognition for its Crusoe processor. Speaking for the EPA, ENERGY
STAR product manager Craig Hershberg said, "Transmeta has made
significant, innovative contributions to energy efficiency and power
management with the development of the Crusoe processor."
Noise, heat and desktop space are becoming important issues in
today's computing environment, particularly in high density locations
such as call centers, hospitals, reception desks and financial trading
rooms. For example, nurse's stations in hospital intensive care units
traditionally use desktop computers with a fan, which blow dust back
into the environment with potential for increased infection. The NEC
PowerMate eco, built without a fan, decreases the risk posed by fans
that recirculate dust and germs. The announcement marks the first time
a major computer manufacturer has created a PC specifically to address
the growing environmental and workplace problems associated with
traditional desktop PCs.

Eco Friendly

The PowerMate eco includes a TFT LCD flat panel screen, which does
not contain the toxic lead found in traditional CRT monitors, and
which causes such serious disposal problems. Furthermore, the
motherboard of the computer is made with completely lead-free solder,
which protects both the individuals involved in reclamation, and the
ground water in case of disposal.
The PowerMate eco is also made of NuCycle(TM) plastic -- an NEC
patented plastic that is 100% recyclable. NuCycle is made of
polycarbonate resin mixed with a special, flame-retardant silicone
compound. Other computer plastics have flame retardant brominated
coatings applied, which do retard flames, but produce harmful gases in
the process. NuCycle's flame retardant is non-toxic and built in,
requiring no toxic coating.

Features & Benefits

The PowerMate eco incorporates a 900MHz Transmeta Crusoe TM5800
processor equipped with a 20MB hard drive and a 15-inch screen into a
footprint 11.5 inches wide x 8.9 inches deep and weighing only 16.8
pounds. Noise is further reduced by using a Fluid Dynamic Bearing
motor in the hard drive. Additional features include 256MB (640MB Max)
of memory to enhance overall system performance and functionality, as
well as a built-in RJ-45 LAN jack for quick network and Internet
connections. The PowerMate eco also provides extensive configuration
flexibility with a standard CD-ROM drive, or optional CDRW/DVD combo
drive, and is offered with either Windows XP Pro or Windows 2000 Pro
operating systems. The PowerMate eco's low energy consumption makes it
Energy Star(R) compliant, and it meets even stricter environmental
specifications set by the Japanese government and the Japan
Electronics andInformation Technology Industries Association (JEITA).

Pricing & Availability

NEC Solutions America offers a standard configuration of the
PowerMate eco, including a 900MHz Transmeta Crusoe TM5800 processor, a
15-inch XGA LCD color screen display, 256MB memory, 20GB hard drive,
and Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Professional or Windows 2000
Professional, starting at $1,599 (U.S.).
