My favourite is Berkeley Castle, in Gloucestershire. It has been owned intermittently for nearly 1000 years by the Berkeley family (which the California city was named after.) On three or four occasions the monarchy has stolen the castle away from the family, but they have always won it back. King Edward II was murdered there in the dungeon. It is located next door to Edward Jenner's house, and they have an excellent museum about the history of smallpox.

Windsor Castle is also a great stop, right outside Heathrow. I suggest getting a book, as there are thousands of fascinating castles, Cathedrals, Roman ruins, and prehistoric stone monuments throughout the UK.
