thecow, [added text] thank you for the link! I saved it but am reluctant to change any settings now because my speed has changed significantly [download from 1500+ down to 200+ kb/s according to pcpitstop] without any changes in settings that I made.

AT&T says to call back Friday. A technician may inspect the outside cable by then. Meanwhile, speed is acceptable while surfing but not the 'blazing' 1,500 kb/s download speed AT&T promises.

[added test] now download speed at pcpitstop is >1,500 kb/s again.
