Yes, aide-de-camp Nolan is the the key to the mystery. The irony is that he was the very first of the Brigade to be shot out from his saddle, before the charge even started.

(Afterthought: We should always be so everlastingly grateful to all those who came before us and made it possible for us to have the pleasure of dissecting these historical events from the comfort and safety of our armchairs).
