Cheaper to put up carriers than to convert old carriers to 1X, isn't it?

I doubt it, but don't forget the free 3G upgrade for data.

PCS can incrementally upgrade their system to 1x any time they want, and in fact have upgraded quite a few BTS already. Since 1x is backward compatible with the IS-95 waveforms and all Qualcomm chipsets can do both formats, they can add a few basestation cards which do 1x waveform and mix them into their system any time they want. Each card costs them like $10-15k, and adds 32-64 channels of 1x.

The same thing for VZ. And then they can start selling 1x phones and grow the roll out as revenue grows and airtime grows.

I can see no reason why either of them won;t turn it on now.

"So why should PCS be interested in spending money to upgrade to 1X? Anyone know?"

If you were just interested in increasing voice capacity and LDR circuit switched data. Then additional non-1X channel cards would be the cheapest path.. But, that is not the reason PCS is going 1X! They are going 1X to launch a packet data network. Along with this all packet data network will come their Push to Chat (BTW Nextel has a trademark on the term Push to Talk) product. Which requires installing new switch infrastructure!

Make no mistake about it. PCS's drive for a total 1X packet network is born in their P-T-C product

So why should PCS be interested in spending money to upgrade to 1X? Anyone know?

Something that recently occurred to me (although I have seen no mention of it) is that especially at the higher frequencies that PCS uses (with their greater attenuation due to buildings and hence greater power fluctuations) PCS may want CDMA2000 for its better (i.e. faster) power control. Probably fewer dropped calls and generally better quality.
