There is no doubt in my mind that liberals stray further from the middle than conservatives. I realize much has changed in the past forty years, but some of the liberal types around here would consider Ward Cleaver from "Leave it to Beaver" a Nazi. Being a little old fashioned is nothing compared to some of the ideas of normalcy liberals have come up with.
