It is also helpful that Apple's Mach-o application packages contain platform-specific subfolders, so you can have multiple target processors in the same application package. If Apple were to release an x86-based OS X, then all of its own apps (which are making up an ever larger percentage of a typical Mac user's software collection) would be shipped as x86-capable packages.

Then it would be up to third-party app developers to "recompile" for x86.

By the way, what's going on right now? AAPL is down 2% after hours.

If I may suggest - if they did port to x86 - they should stick to the normal x86 implementation, as going with Opteron might be making the same mistake all over again.
