During war, in a uniform, is a time not to think but to obey automatically. Well, we all make declarative statements here (the nature of the medium) not meant to be taken literally in all respects. Actually, one of the distinguishing aspects of the U.S. grunt soldier is his ability to show initiative and think for himself when battles become chaotic. Stephen Ambrose (I believe) felt that was the KEY reason we prevailed on the ground in WW II. Countless paratroopers on D-Day became separated from their units behind the lines, and many were found to have fought to the death in isolated foxholes.
