The decision to make Apple OS X computers with x86 chips and the decision to have OS X run on wintel clones are two entirely separate decisions.

That is exactly correct.

It would be a "great thing" if Apple were to build their systems around x86 architecture. They could leverage the speed AND get less expensive chips, all for "nothing". As long as Apple (and Apple alone) sells the boxes, they can still mark them up handsomely.

This is about the ONLY way Apple can squeeze a little more money out of their current customers, as they can probably get a little additional margin out of it initially.

But, here's the catch: it doesn't solve their problem of growth, it just keeps them profitable for a little longer. The only people who would buy this new system would be existing Mac users. PC users are not going to be any more interested in Apple than before, unless they have seamless Windows emulation (which they could not).

Someone proposed a dual boot XP/OS X machine. This is a terrible idea (IMHO). It would just cost more (have to pay Microsoft and Apple), and would again only be useful to Apple users who want to run some Microsoft applications. (Any really good application would have been ported to PC already, so all the PC user gets is another OS to learn--hardly a great selling point! And whatever "advantages" Apple had would be gone since they would be sharing the same hardware. Forget dual boot!
