Don't have any data on hand, but the individual stories I am hearing are becoming more and more intense in terms of worrying and the desire to save for the future...whatever it may be.

savings levels are below the historical norm. one thing to keep in mind is that people typically increase their savings rate during recessions. that didn't happen during the first part of the current recession, because of the housing bubble and easy credit from auto makers etc. however, now the consumer is starting to tighten his belt and the savings rate is going up. however, the savings rate could go much higher than it is now. i am pretty sure it will get into double digits before all is said and done, even though we're talking about the profligate american consumer.
